WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- There's a new option for those in need of medical attention. And the best part is that it's free.

It's a primary and preventive health care clinic located in Wilkes-Barre. This free clinic is the brain child of Doctor Susan Sordoni and it's made possible through different private and public donations. “Volunteers In Medicine” officially bought the building a few days ago and opened the clinic to the public for the first time on Monday.

Thomas Tula and his wife dropped in to Wilkes-Barre's new free medical clinic on North Penn Ave. He complains of an aching back and says he needs to see a doctor. Thomas said, "I tried changing my tire for my car and I hurt my back."

After three years in the making Monday was opening day at "Volunteers In Medicine." The 9 to 5 Monday through Friday primary care clinic is for the under and uninsured. Executive Director Kelly Ranieli said,"We have about 7 or 8 appointments so far this afternoon. The week is booked up. At this point we still have times available if patients would like to call."

Patients will come in, take a seat, see a staff member and receive care in one of two examining rooms. Ranieli added, "We'll see all patients the first time. The staff is here to assist them filling out paperwork and if they're eligible for other community organizations in the area."

Some last minute computer set up and electrical work is underway before the first patient is seen. There are a few paid positions here, but the majority of staff will volunteer. Kelly Ranieli added, “We have a list of 160 volunteers to assist. There will be volunteer orientation this Wednesday and next week also."

It's a great new option for people like Thomas Tula, his wife and six kids. At full operation, there will be a total of 6 exam rooms, a pharmacy and a dental and eye care clinic.

Here's a few ways you qualify to come to Volunteers In Medicine:

1. You must have an income up to 200% of the poverty level.
2. You must be working with no health care coverage.
3. College kids who've just come off your parents plan.
4. Those 55 and up who don't qualify for medicare.
5. Or you don't have Medicare Part A.

Walk-ins are welcome but appointments are encouraged. You can call 970-2864 for an appointment.
