BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA COUNTY- Many are calling it one of the most important elections in history. And the voter registration deadline is quickly approaching.
At both the Republicans' and Democrats' election headquarters in Columbia County, volunteers are urging everyone to get registered to vote this November. The deadline to sign up is this Monday, October 6th.
Volunteer Michelle Peguero said, “If you've never voted before you are not doing your citizen's duty to do so. I mean it's your right to vote."
At the county's election office, coordinator Joanne Reichart goes on step further. "It's not only your right, it's your responsibility…You can't always let somebody else pick your leaders for you. You have to stand up and be counted."
Election officials want to make it very clear, if you're not registered by October 6th, you won't have the chance to cast a ballot.
"Because if they come in here October 7th, they're a day late. They will not be voting in the Presidential. This is an historic election any way you look at it,” she added.
And signing up is a piece of cake. It only takes a couple minutes to fill out the form, which you can find at your county's election office or party headquarters. You can even download a form off the Internet.
Devon Vicari said, "You're given the opportunity, why not? People have an opinion for everything else, why not this too?"
Vicari is a Bloom University student getting ready to vote for the first time. "I think the younger crowd, especially college students who are mostly just turning 18, it's their first election to vote, so it's important to get your voice out there."
