WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Nurses at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital are demanding "patients before profits" and have thousands backing them up. In fact they have 10,000 people backing them up.
Members of the nurses union presented a petition they say has 10,000 names to the hospitalÕs CEO. The nurses have been gathering signatures on the petition for months.
The nurses will bargain with hospital officials later this month.
The hospital issued the following statement:
Wilkes-Barre General Hospital is currently engaged in contract negotiations with PASNAP, the union that represents the hospitalÕs registered nurses. Today, PASNAP conducted a demonstration at the hospital. The demonstration had no impact on patient care Š all services remained open and fully staffed.
We respect our nurses and hold them in high regard, and we are concerned that the union has chosen to side-step the collective bargaining process through tactics designed to attract media attention. Such efforts are counterproductive to good-faith bargaining and appear inconsistent with a sincere interest in reaching a formal agreement.
Because we respect the collective bargaining process set forth by law, it is our position that discussions between the hospital and PASNAP can only be finalized at the bargaining table through fair and appropriate negotiations. The hospital remains committed to good-faith bargaining and we sincerely hope a mutually acceptable agreement will be reached soon. Future bargaining sessions are scheduled next week. | | |
