STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY - Fitness experts say the average adult gains seven pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

With the holidays just around the corner Eyewitness News wanted to off you some encouragement. I (Laurie Monteforte) just completed the YFit Media Challenge.

It started eleven weeks ago. I was out of breath after just a few minutes of running through an obstacle course. I also had an unhealthy body fat percentage. YMCA Fitness Director Dorinda Daley said, "A lot of chronic diseases are associated with being a higher body fat level."

For a woman, the healthy body fat range is 25%-30%. Mine was 37.53%. Daley said, "Our goal with you was to help you build a little bit of muscle, help you lose a little bit of body fat and lose overall inches and improve your cardiovascular endurance."

The Pocono Family YMCA set me up with Trainer Ruth Bush. She remarked, "It's not all about being skinny, there's a lot more to it."

We worked on my endurance with running and strength with weights. Daley helped me put together a healthy eating plan. There was no crash diet and no fast food. But I did allow myself dessert once a week. Bush said, "I think that was a big part - with your diet - you stuck to that."

In the end it all paid off. I lost more than 11% of my body fat. Daley said, "So you're definitely in a healthy body fat level right now."

I also dropped 12 inches. That includes more than two inches from my waist and about four inches from my hips. Daley said, "You're just carrying less body fat around your internal organs which is great for preventing diseases."

The Pocono Family YMCA Challenged me to get fit and now I encourage you to reach for your own fitness goals. Daley said, "Now that you've reached a very healthy and fit level your goals are -- the sky's the limit."

[In total I lost nine pounds. Daley said it's important not to focus on the scale because it does not factor in muscle gain. In addition to losing weight and gaining muscle I feel a lot better and I have more energy than I did in the past.]
