Wal-Mart Rig Filled With Black Friday Deals Stolen - Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 5:35PM EST

WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY --Now to a Black Friday caper that's left hundreds of shoppers frustrated and empty -handed. A local Wal-Mart didn't have the discounted DVD players it advertised and wouldn't offer rain checks. Now, some shoppers are calling it "false advertising." They contacted consumer reporter Jeff Chirico and he's been digging into this story.

The Thanksgiving Day circular a portable DVD player for less than 50 bucks but the store in Wilkes-Barre Township had none. Company officials tell WBRE News the truck filled with products was stolen.

Inside this Wal-Mart Supercenter in Wilkes-Barre Township, we're told hundreds waited to buy this 8 inch portable DVD player complete with a case and charger. Wal-Mart rolled back the price on this 80 dollar bundle to less than fifty bucks but the supplies never rolled in. Michele Balliet of Shickshinny was one of the customers waiting for the player. "We got there and waiting in line and somebody came out and said that there was some but they were way in the back and they couldn't get them or get to them. So we were standing there for a while and they said they don't have them at all."

Balliet calls it false advertising. "People were really upset because it was advertised in the paper and they never had any," says Balliet.

But today, WBRE News learns from a Wal-mart spokesperson, that a truck heading for this store was stolen from the distribution center on Thanksgiving night and along with it --the supply of portable DVD players and digital frames. A company spokesperson says in an email "we sincerely apologize to those customers who came to the store Friday and were disappointed...we are now working with local authorities to recover the items. We unfortunately cannot re-order more of these products as they were specially packaged for this event.

But WBRE News has found, walmart.com, offers what appears to be the same Venturer DVD player package for thirty dollars more leaving some customers wondering why the store itself can't order another supply for the Wilkes-Barre store.

I asked that same question to the Wal-Mart spokesperson --but she didn't quite answer our question. She says it's the same product but packaged differently. We also could not find a local police department investigating this case as she first indicated. So we pressed the corporate office and they told us they're still trying to figure out where the tractor trailer went missing and at that point they'll contact the proper authorities.
