MONTROSE, SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY - Memorial Day took on special meaning Monday in Susquehanna County.

The borough of Montrose honored a native son who was killed in the line of duty nearly five years ago. The family of Staff Sergeant Dan Arnold came together to dedicate a new walking trail in Arnold's honor.

Arnold and several other national guard soldiers were killed in the line of duty in Ramadi, Iraq in 2005.

"We are so greatful that the town has recognized him and honored him in this way," Janet Arnold said. Janet Arnold is Dan Arnold's mother.

"Daniel played in this park for hours and hours and hours and he would really appreciate this," Kendall Arnold said. Kendall is Dan's father.

Arnold went to Iraq knowing the dangers. His family says he believed in what he was doing. When he died, he left behind a wife and two young sons, Devon and Cody.

"It's been a long time in the making to get a place where we can honor Dan and the boys and all the other soldiers who have given their life and fought for this country," Arnold's widow Kim Harris said.

The sign that now stands in his honor was made by students at Montrose Area High School.

"I think it's fitting that the people growing up in this area know that freedom isn't free," councilman Craig Reimel said. "People have died so that we can do what we do and have life as good as we have it."
