SCHNECKSVILLE - This Saint Patrick's Day some people found a pot of gold - but not at the end of the rainbow - but at the end of a Wall Street plan.

The checks just kept coming Monday. Hundreds of thousands to local schools, tens of thousands to area businesses. Nine big checks totaling more than $600,000. All to help bring big name finance companies to northeast Pennsylvania as part of Wall Street West. That's a back up operation for New York's financial district.

Wall Street West handed out the money at Lehigh Carbon Community College Monday so schools can teach students the skills they need to work in the finance industry. Officials call the grants "innovation investments."

"We are just thrilled to be here and welcome the opportunities," sad Kenneth Lord from the University of Scranton.

That university picked up the biggest check, nearly $200,000 to start a program that teaches how to manage world currency. "Certainly a very relevant thing today given the value of the dollar and given the state of the world economy," said Chris Haran of Wall Street West.

The University already teaches students the theories of world currency. But thanks to the investment money the school can now buy special software so students get the hands on skills they need to work on Wall Street.

Lord explained, "This give us an opportunity to send students out the door to take on these positions without training."

Kings College in Wilkes Barre also got some grant - two checks totaling about $190,000. They will use it to offer a free graduate course for high school teachers.

"When the mathematics teachers are then exposed to advanced mathematics from the financial world, then they'll be able to take that back to the high schools," said Dr. Joyce Armstrong from Kings.

Wall Street West expects to give another round of grants later this year - bringing the total investment money to two million dollars in two years.
