SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- After a long day of counting paper ballots, two Democratic candidates for Lackawanna County Commissioner declare victory. They won control of Lackawanna County government but the Republicans are not giving up so easily. They want a recount.
It was a celebration of victory outside St. Mary's Center in Scranton. Democrats Mike Washo and Corey O'Brien declare victory over incumbent Republicans A.J. Munchak and Robert Cordaro. Just a few feet away inside the building, those paper ballots were being counted. The unofficial results show Washo and O'Brien with a nearly 2-1 margin of victory.
“You see we believe that Lackawanna County's brightest days are yet to come. We believe our residents deserve honesty in government. We believe people deserve better. We want to make those ideals a reality," said O’Brien.
Both men campaigned on the idea of a more open county government. Mike Washo said, “While it's been said that victory has a thousand fathers and defeat is an orphan, we will treat each of you same respect we treat members of our families, whether you voted for us or not. We really mean that. We’ve got to change the culture."
The results are unofficial and Republicans A.J. Munchak and Bob Cordaro aren't commenting or conceding this election. They say the machines that scanned those paper ballots may not be accurate and they want a "hand” recount.
As it stands now, Munchak would become the Minority County Commissioner with a 78-vote advantage over Cordaro.
