Wayne County School District Mourns Drowning Victim

Wayne County School District Mourns Drowning Victim - Monday, June 7, 2010 at 04:05AM EST

HONESDALE, WAYNE COUNTY - A school district in Wayne County is mourning the loss of a student after a weekend drowning.

Sharrod Moses, 16, died Saturday while in the Lackawaxen River in Honesdale.

Moses was a sophomore at Honesdale High School. District leaders say they followed their tragic event plan Monday. Fellow students were told about the death in their homerooms and counselors were made available.

A small bunch of flowers now sits next to the river in the area of Industrial Point.

Superintendent Thomas Jenkins says his death brings the school year to a tragic close. This Thursday is the last day of classes and Saturday is graduation.

"Underclassmen are looking for the school year to be over and that's a happy time for them. It's just a terrible thing, especially when a young person passes away," Wayne Highlands Superintendent Thomas Jenkins said.

Fellow students say Moses had a core group of friends.

"I was in a couple classes with him a few years ago. He was a funny kid. I liked him," sophomore Taylor Johannes said.

Students say the mood inside the high school was somber Monday as they learned about the death.

"You can see a lot of people are more down and I know a lot of his friends," Rony Lanz said.

"It is kind of sad to hear about it. I don't think I've known anybody that died that was my age until now," Johannes said.

Police and the coroner have ruled the death an accidental drowning. Investigators say they found Moses' body after about 35 minutes of searching Saturday. He was found in a deep hole in the river.

As the school year comes to an end, officials want students to know they are here if they are needed.

"They can always contact us if they need help with something," superintendent Jenkins said. "If someone is still exhibiting grief or not handling it well, they can always contact us. We're always available all through the summer."
