Wee Wons Day Care Show Off Inventions

Wee Wons Day Care Show Off Inventions - Friday, February 27, 2009 at 5:44PM EST

POCONO LAKE, MONROE COUNTY - While the Governor's Budget looks like it will cut a lot of programs. There's one that might actually expand. It's called the Pre K Counts program. Students at Wee Wons Pre-School in Pocono Pines are part of it. Eyewitness News visited their science fair Friday.
It's the classic school science fair with a "little" twist. Like high school, students observe, predict, tests and present their inventions. But this is not high school it's preschool.

The kids solved tricky problems we all deal with like building soap catchers for that dripping bathroom dispenser or how to stay dry on rainy nights. "My invention is an umbrella with a flashlight," explained Steven Rivera.

The Pre K counts program helps kids who might not otherwise go to preschool. "It could be underprivileged, it could be developmental delays, it could be second language learners," said teacher Betty Ilyas.

Parents and teachers say projects like the fair help children learn without even realizing it. "I'm hoping that this sets big dreams for the children. That they can do anything, that they can be anything," said Ilyas.

Pre School Lessons, that can help them through high school and beyond.

Pre K Counts has requested the new budget provide for 1,500 more kids to enroll in the program.
