Welles Street Fire Wilkes-Barre - Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at 11:53PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- A massive fire blows smoke through Wilkes-Barre neighborhoods. The flames and smoke could be seen from miles away.

Calls cames into the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department just after 5:30 Tuesday evening for a double-block home full of fire. The second and third floors of 122 and 124 South Welles were on-fire.

Firefighters were able to go in and battle the blaze. Assistant Fire Chief Bruce Reilly says they weren't getting the upper hand and changed their attack plan. When that wasn't working, we pulled them out and hit it from the outside.

The fire drew quite a crowd. Many like Nick Hughes of Wilkes-Barre told us they saw the flames shooting up into the air for miles away. "You could smell it from a mile away. Even when i was coming in my car, I could smell it and it hit you in the face kind of," he said.

Police are telling WBRE News they are questioning at least one witness for information. There were no injuries. Fire officials say the home was vacant and fire inspectors will be back on the scene Wednesday morning.
