SOUTH CANAAN TOWNSHIP, WAYNE COUNTY- The Western Wayne School District is renewing its contract with the Pennsylvania State Police to provide School Resource Officers to the district.
The agreement was first drafted after racial tensions lead to a fight among two students in 2005 and a bomb threat at the high school. The district includes parts of 6 townships, but only one has its own police department.
The State Police provides 5 troopers who work at the school either before or after their regular shifts on an overtime basis. The school district covers the costs.
Superintendent Andy Falonk calls the agreement one of the best things the district has ever done. He says its a prefect answer for rural districts that don't have access to municipal police departments as the source for their School Resource Officers.
