Everyone's heard of the Good Housekeeping seal.

In fact, Eyewitness News airs 3 weekly Good Housekeeping segments. But do you know what the seal really is and how it protects consumers?

For 100 years, the Good Housekeeping seal has helped consumers make smart decisions buying products.

Marjorie Cubisno Dir, Good Housekeeping Research Institute:
"The Good Housekeeping seal was first bestowed on 21 products in 1909."

Today, thousands of products carry the seal.

"If you buy a product with the Good Housekeeping seal and it becomes defective, within the first two years, Good Housekeeping will either replace the product or reimburse you. Before a product can earn the Good Housekeeping seal, it is evaluated by the scientists at the Good Housekeeping research institute. They make sure that the product performs effectively, and that it lives up to all of its claims."

If you have a complaint about a product with the seal, Good Housekeeping's consumer & reader services department will investigate.

“The first step is to send them a complaint investigation form, where we ask for details of the problem. We also request a copy of their sales receipt or any service records. If we find that the product is defective, we ask the consumer "do you want a replacement?"

"If they do, we arrange for that, and if they want a refund, then we send them a refund check."

Today, more than 5,000 products have the seal.
