WILKES-BARRE / SCRANTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, LUZERNE COUNTY - The future of baseball in Northeastern Pennsylvania was on the minds of commissioners in two counties Thursday afternoon.

Commissioners from both Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties came together to see what needs to be done to keep baseball in our area.

The meeting lasted for more than two hours. It was mainly a conversation with experts about PNC Field, which needs an estimated $13 million in repairs.

"Taking care of the stadium is absolutely necessary. One hundred percent," expert Craig Schmitt said.

When the question of who should pay for the repairs came up, the meeting got interesting.

"Clearly, we have open ears for trying to form some kind of partnership but at the same time, finances are the key," Luzerne County commissioner Maryanne Petrilla said.

Voices became louder when questions about who actually owns the team surfaced.

"He (Steve Urban) thinks Luzerne County is an owner. It isn't," Lackawanna County Commissioner AJ Munchak said.

Top brass from the current Scranton / Wilkes-Barre Yankees organization looked on.

"If you want to recommend that we establish a joint stadium authority, I think you need to bring that recommendation to us," Luzerne County Commissioner Steven Urban said.

"It's up to the lawyers to decide if I'm right or your right," Munchak said.

When the discussion simmered down, bigger ideas for PNC Field surfaced.

Lackawanna County commissioner Corey O'Brien said he wants to explore adding even more fan ammenties, like liveable suites and/or opening up the outfield for spectators.

"Wouldn't it be great to have something like that? In the outfield where your kids could be playing and you could turn around and be watching a ball game?" O'Brien said.

Any extras would be on top of the current estimates of $13 million to make needed repairs to PNC Field.
