WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- The Wilkes-Barre mail processing plant is moving. The post office isn't. That's the message from the U. S. Postal Service.
Beginning in October the mail processing plant and distribution center on South Main Street will phase out. The United States Postal Service says less are sending mail. That's the reason for the closure.
Nearly 200 jobs here at the post office distribution center could be affected. Postmaster Judith Lech says customers shouldn't worry. "People definitely get nervous because they don't really understand the difference between customer service side and the plant side. The plant is the processing side makes everything work but people donŐt know about it because it's in the back."
Lech says customer service will stay the same here in Wilkes-Barre. Distribution center workers might relocate to Scranton or Allentown.
Keven Perrins of Kingston hopes the jobs won't move far from Luzerne County. "Unfortunately I mean something has to be done but go ahead and close the smaller ones. I mean, Plymouth, Ashley, Kingston, I mean this is a distribution center," said Perrins.
Some workers here will also be offered early retirement. While the workers and trucks will leave, many services here on South Main Street will not.
The U. S. Postal Service says the customer service side of the post office will stay at the South Main Street building for now.
The U. S. Postal Service says the distribution center closing in Wilkes-Barre will be complete in January. | | |
