CALIFORNIA- A local college professor is patiently waiting for news from California.
His wife, daughter, and mother in law are in the San Diego area, dodging deadly wildfires.
Dr. Ken Klemow of Wilkes University says his family is right in the line of fire.
His daughter described the scene, "She said it was hard to get outside. In fact the word she used was armageddon. That it was just so black that you couldn't see the sun, you couldn't see more than a few feet in front of you," Klemow says.
His daughter, Meryl is a 2004 graduate of Wyoming Valley West High School.
She's lived in the San Diego area for four years, but chose to evacuate her home Monday.
"She just said it got to the point where they couldn't go outside without their throat closing up or their eyes tearing up," says Klemow.
Klemow's wife and mother in law have been in the San Diego area since Thursday.
They were there for a business trip, and to visit Meryl.
But Sunday night, things got scary.
The fires were spreading, and they had to leave their hotel.
They stayed the night in a San Diego hotel lobby, with other evacuees.
Klemow says, "they shared that space with many many people who have been burned out of their homes. And so these people had no where to go. They came with whatever belongings they could bring."
Now Dr. Klemow will patiently wait until his wife and mother in law fly home Tuesday night.
His daughter will wait out the fires, and hopefully move back to her home when all is safe.
Dr. Klemow says his daughter is waiting at a friend’s house.
He says it's unknown if the fires reached her home.
She'll try to return in the next few days, when emergency crews allow everyone back into their neighborhoods. | | |
