WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY - More than 20 college students from Wilkes University are giving up the fun and sun of their spring breaks to help others.
The students all left from the university for their alternative spring breaks on Saturday afternoon. Instead of going to places like the Bahamas, the volunteers will spend the next week helping people in Belize or New Orleans. The students will work in animal shelters, public parks and some will also tutor young children.
"I like to help people. I love community service and I figured what a better way to have a vacation and help out," Wilkes University junior Shelley Hydock said.
"I really like helping people and I knew people who did it last year and I was really interested in everything they did," Wilkes University junior Jennifer Smeraldo said.
The groups are expected to return to Luzerne County next weekend. | |
