Williamsport KidWatch Program - Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 5:57PM EST

Williamsport, Lycoming County-

A new initiative in Williamsport hopes to provide a safe haven for neighborhood kids.

The KidWatch program uses banners displayed in the yards of homes kids can go to for help.

Local crime watch volunteers, community emergency response team members, and a few others can apply for the banners.

Williamsport Assistant Fire Chief Tom Swigart explained, "KidWatch is established so that if kids are in trouble when they're out, and they see that banner, they know that they have somebody they can trust to go for help. It's all about people volunteering to take back their neighborhoods. That's what it's all about."

Williamsport police will conduct background checks at no cost for those applying for the KidWatch banners.
