Williamsport to Participate in National Health Competition

Williamsport to Participate in National Health Competition - Friday, April 3, 2009 at 5:01PM EST

WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY- The City of Williamsport is about to get some national exposure. Billtown will soon be competing against several other cities nationwide, in a health competition. And everyone is urged to get involved with the 50 Million Pound Challenge.
Mayor Gabe Campana doesn't usually wear a track suit to work, but Friday he did as he announced his city is joining the challenge. “It’s a challenge for all our citizens, young and old, in regards to creating a healthy lifestyle by exercising more," said Campana.

The mayor's youth council is helping to plan the city's events. The goal is to keep everyone, especially kids - healthy. Penn College Freshman Chris Benson said, “When you look at the facts, Lycoming County, its just disheartening to think how much child obesity there is."

Williamsport High School Senior Jessica McDermott said, “I know a lot of students in High School, starting to join gyms, the whole senior year and the freshman 15, is a big fear."

Anyone between the ages of 1 and 100 can sign-up for the 50 Million Pound Challenge. All you have to do is log onto .

Yolonda Kirby of State Farm Insurance said, “The information is confidential and everyone will have access to a ton of resources, a weight tracker, shopping lists, menus."

“When you talk about health, its not only physical health, its emotional health and social health as well. Being a former educator, I know it’s important that we educate our children," said Campana.

The list of other cities taking part in the challenge will be released Monday. Williamsport is the only one in Pennsylvania. “I have a challenge to those 11 other cities. We're gonna do great and we're looking forward to the competition. And we’re going to win!” said Campana.

NBC's Today Show plans to track the city's progress in mid-May. A 5K walk and health expo is also planned in the city for May 16th.
