SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- $76,000. That's how much police say a Scranton woman stole from her employer.
Dolores Seber is facing a slew of charges, including theft and forgery. The 50-year-old Scranton woman is expected to be in court later this month.
According to court papers, Seber says she took the money because she was having financial problems and then got hooked on gambling.
Seber answered the door at her West Scranton home Wednesday afternoon but she didn't want to talk.
Court papers do some talking of their own though. According to police they say Seber stole nearly $75,999.39 from the law firm Byrne, Neyhart & Higgins. That's where she worked as Office Manager.
Neighbors of the suspect were shocked to hear the news. Delores Menichini said, ÒWe all do have problems but there's other ways to handle it. I mean, you don't write yourself out a bunch of checks."
A bunch of checks indeed. Court papers say Seber wrote herself 130 separate checks since January 2008. In each instance she'd forge signatures and make-up expenses to cover her tracks.
Workers at the law firm talked with us off camera. They say Seber worked here for 14 years. They also said they're shocked about what happened.
Seber has been fired from her job. Neighbors like George Bonifanti say Seber is a quiet woman who keeps to herself. ÒI feel sorry for her. She's probably got a hard life you know," he said.
According to investigators Seber had access to the law firm's checks but had no authority to write any out.
She is free on $10,000 unsecured bail and is expected to face a preliminary hearing next week. | | |
