NESQUEHONING, CARBON COUNTY -- People stopped by West Railroad Street in Nesquehoning after hearing about a New Year's Day fire. Some people were just thankful their homes are still standing.

"We were getting done with dinner, sitting down, having coffee, and there was a knock at the door," said Anthony Dunlap, who lives in an attached row home at 134 West Railroad Street.

Three doors down from him, 62-year-old Hella Cordova's apartment was up in flames. Police say her Christmas tree caught fire, and she was burned while trying to put it out.

"She was burned pretty bad," said Dunlap. "She's down at the Lehigh Valley burn unit because 20% of her body's burned."

People who live in the three homes attached to Cordova's are waiting to hear from the fire marshal to see if the building will get condemned. The cause of the fire is still under investigation until police can talk with Cordova. They expect her to be in the hospital for an extended period of time.
