SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY --A city woman pleads for the return of her pure-bred pooch. She wants it back from the people who adopted it. It's a heart-breaking story that could happen to other pet owners. Consumer reporter Jeff Chirico here with a story you'll only see on Eyewitness News.

When Lisa Harding's little Yorkie ran away, it was found, taken to a shelter, and soon adopted. It all happened while Lisa was in the hospital and had no idea anything happened. Now --the Scranton women is asking for her dog's new family to bring peanut home for the holidays.

"She's out there and I can't get to her and I don't want her thinking that mommy's not trying to find her cause I am." While Lisa Harding of Scranton was in the hospital for a month, her 3- year-old Yorkshire Terrier, Peanut, ran away from her sister's house. It wasn't until Lisa came home that her sister broke the news. "She's my little baby. I don't have any children and that was my little baby Peanut."

Lisa posted an ad in the paper. She heard from the woman who found her and had taken her to the Humane Society of Lackawanna County. She was adopted out. "I said, I'm the owner. I was in the hospital. Can't you help me? She wouldn't help me." Lisa asked if they would call the new family. Humane Society executive director Warren Reed says it's against policy. All adoptions remain confidential. "If you adopted the dog from us would you want to give it up? The dog's part of your family."

A story like this could happen to other pet owners. Reed says to prevent this from happening to your dog or cat, have them licensed and microchipped." The microchip process takes just seconds and can help shelters track down your pet if it runs away. Peanut wasn't microchipped and was found without tags.

“Peanut slept next to me every night." Lisa says she was wearing a collar when she took off and wishes she would have microchipped her. She has one request for Peanut's new family. “Please if you have any compassion, please bring her home, that's all I want."

Lisa is offering to cover the cost for the family to adopt a new dog. In the meantime, this illustrates the importance of having your dog microchipped.
