SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - A Lackawanna County woman is going to prison for a series of home break-ins all across Lackawanna County. Tara Morgan Modeski was sentenced Tuesday afternoon to between two-to-eight years in state prison.

Prosecutors say she stole at least $100,000 worth of jewelry from homes in the Dunmore and Clark Summit areas. She came face-to-face with many of her victims in court.

Barbara Santarsiero lost $15,000 dollars worth of jewelry.

"Obviously she has problems but now we all have problems because of her," Santarsiero said.

Morgan Modeski was originally charged with burglary and theft in January. Prosecutors say she broke into more than 20 homes, in part, to feed her drug habit.

"This is not a person who needed to do this, not a person when you first meet her, you'd expect her to do this, but she did it," defense lawyer William Peters said.

Morgan Modeski's family declined to comment as they left the courthouse, but her victims didn't hold back. They say they didn't buy her tearful apology in the courtroom.

"I didn't have a whole lot of sympathy for her. If this had been one victim, one house and she realized what she had done, that's one thing," victim Sarah Madden of Dickson City said.

Before imposing a sentence, the judge told Morgan Modeski she not only took possession, but took her victim's sense of security. He pointed out a letter by a six-year-old boy who's now scared of robbers coming into his house.

"I was waking up at night, just like that little boy, thinking that people were in my home," Santarsiero said.

"Nobody comes home by themselves anymore. I changed my work schedule. New deadbolts. It changes your life," Madden said.

Morgan Modeski will also have to pay back all of her victims. She will serve her sentence at the state prison in Muncy.
