STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY - A Bethlehem area woman will head to court on charges she lied about being raped. Laura Gruver, 22, waived her right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday morning. Her attorney says she'll likely work out some sort of plea deal.
Gruver claimed she was raped in August. She told police she was waling in an East Stroudsburg University parking lot when a man put a knife to her throat, dragged her into the woods, and assaulted her.
Police say she later admitted she made the whole thing up because she was having personal problems. Her lawyer John Waldron said, "Laura cooperated in this case - made a mistake in judgment and after she made that mistake she decided the best thing to do was come forward."
Assistant District Attorney Mike Rakaczewski said, "If there's allegations of false reports it's gonna make it more difficult for the victim to come forward make it more difficult for individuals to believe that victim."
Gruver's attorney says her client has some sort of mental illness. He'll use that information to explain her actions in future court hearings. | |
