SWIFTWATER, MONROE COUNTY - A Pocono woman who helped establish a national veterans group has died. Colleen Mussolino, of Bushkill, was 62 years old.
She used person struggles to make life better for other women. Pastor Bob Tutrone said, "Colleen was a wonderful person."
Mussolino joined the army when she was 19 years old. She served as a cook during the Vietnam Era. During that time she said four men raped her and left her for dead. "She took a personal tragedy and she turned it around to the point where she wanted to help other veterans. That I really respect her for. I'm very proud of her," said Glen Lippincott. He's the President of the Pocono Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
Lippincott said Mussolino was an active member of the local group for a while but then decided she could help more people at the national level. He explained, "She felt very strongly about coming up with an organization that was by women for women."
Mussolino was a co founder of the Women's Veterans of America. She served as its National Commander. The group has helped countless women veterans. Tutrone said,"I don't think you could put a price on what Colleen did."
The community will honor Collen with a Memorial service at Saint Paul's United Church of Christ in Swiftwater Saturday at 9:30 a. m. "It's critically important that we keep the veterans foremost in our minds," said Tutrone.
The Pastor hopes many people will honor Mussolino's service and sacrifices. He said, "She was just person who devoted her life to the Veterans." | | |
