Williamsport, Lycoming County-

Five families in Central Pennsylvania will have new homes in less than a year. That’s thanks to the Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity. Today, they celebrated World Habitat Day 2008.

About 600 volunteers will spend 10,000 hours this year building five Habitat for Humanity homes in Williamsport’s Newberry neighborhood.

Executive Director Todd Fox noted, “There’s five deserving families that need what we’re doing…We’re committed to making a long term difference in their lives and many others.”

On this day it was not the normal volunteers, but rather Habitat’s board members and staff that were handling the heavy workload. They say trading in their office work for construction work was an exciting challenge for the day.

Fox explained, “It’s amazing. Because often times we’re not on site, except to maybe come in and thank them for their efforts. So for us to be able to get dirty and experience what they do every day, it’s an awesome experience.”

Associate Director Kristine Combs added, “I think actually if some of our regular volunteers were out here they’d be snickering because we don’t get very much opportunity to be out on the site so this is a great day.”

One of Habitat for Humanity’s main goals is to bring attention to the inadequate housing conditions in which many city residents are forced to live. The local chapter has completed a total of 36 homes.

The Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity strives to build five new homes annually. It’s a lofty goal that has undeniable impacts on the community.

Combs said, “It’s just great to be able to work on a project from beginning to end and be able to see the results and to see them get their key at the end is real exciting.”

The Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity was formed in 1989. Officials say they’re always looking for new volunteers.
